Kareila, which one are you thinking of? That describes at least a dozen of my failed communities ;)

(ETA: Oops, I misread! I thought you were talking about me, not yourself.)

I'd be interested in reading your thoughts as well, both as a current participant in nascent communities and as someone who accidentally founded a popular online community several years ago that eventually fell apart due to a lack of available community management tools.

Nikki, what you describe reminds me of this blog post that passed through my feed reader the other day: http://www.feverbee.com/2009/11/the-interest-must-comes-first.html

Hi Skud! I'm quite interested in what you are going to be writing about. I helped found Feisty Aphrodite (a now-defunct site for young women and internet activism) and it was almost a full-time job just trying to get people into the community. We would do a lot of real world stuff (i.e. handing out T-shirts, giving talks on Internet Activism, etc) but it was still hard to engage young women. I would love to hear about how you pull people into the community (because Feisty Aphrodite is something we would like to start up again) and how you keep sane dealing with a thousand different view points.

Thanks for the insights, as always.

I don't have much to add, Skud, but I'm also thinking about what makes people decide they want to identify with a particular community. How much they're committed to one or another. How much they're motivated by profit, duty, fun, or the intrinsic importance of what the community does. What makes them want to stick around. Stuff like that.
